In a highly significant event for the country, the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, led the National Municipal Meeting, a gathering that brought together mayors and governors from all regions of the national territory and from all political forces. The main objective of the event was to join efforts for peacebuilding, ensure access to potable water, and strengthen the constitutional rights of indigenous peoples.

“Mexico is a great country, and as long as we stay united, there is no problem we cannot face together,” was the message Sheinbaum shared with the leaders attending the meeting.

One of the most notable points of the meeting was the signing of the agreement for the creation of the Indigenous Component of the Social Infrastructure Contributions Fund (FAIS). This mechanism seeks to recognize and uphold the constitutional rights of indigenous peoples by directly allocating resources they can use to decide, according to their traditions and customs, which projects to prioritize.

“The goal is to hold over 13,000 assemblies with members of indigenous communities to ensure these decisions are fully participatory,” the President emphasized.

Sheinbaum also extended an invitation to local leaders to guarantee universal access to potable water through the implementation of a Master Plan. This project involves pooling resources from all three levels of government to carry out high-impact actions on water infrastructure over the next three years.

“Together, we can solve the problems related to water infrastructure and sanitation in our municipalities,” she stated.

Another key focus of this meeting was the construction of the Pathways of Peace, a program inspired by the Safe Routes initiative Sheinbaum implemented during her tenure as Head of Government in Mexico City. This project aims to ensure the safety of women and girls during their daily commutes, thus strengthening the National Security Strategy.

“All of this is part of the budget allocated to municipalities for the benefit of Mexican men and women. A budget for indigenous peoples and communities, support to solve water problems, and building Pathways of Peace across our territory together,” the President emphasized.

Sheinbaum recalled her experience as the former mayor of Tlalpan to highlight her understanding of the challenges faced by municipal leaders. “Let it be known that the President may not be able to visit every municipality in the country, but we are present; I have not forgotten what it means to be a municipal president. We know what it means to be a mayor, we know what you go through, and you are part of this government of our country that is transforming Mexico for the better,” she concluded.

Through initiatives like these, the federal government seeks to consolidate collaboration between different levels of government and ensure that public policies directly benefit the most vulnerable communities, thereby contributing to the construction of a fairer and more equitable Mexico.
