Mexico Launches Winter 2024 Heroes Paisanos Program to Support Migrants Returning for the Holidays
The National Migration Institute (INM) and the Government of Puebla have announced the launch of the 2024 Winter Special Operation of the Héroes Paisanos Program, designed to welcome and assist Mexican nationals living abroad as they return home for the holiday season. The initiative will run from November 28, 2024, to January 12, 2025.
The program was inaugurated in Puebla’s iconic Zócalo Plaza by INM Commissioner Francisco Garduño Yáñez and Puebla Governor Sergio Salomón Céspedes Peregrina, alongside representatives from federal, state, and municipal authorities, as well as private and social organizations.
Nationwide Operation to Ensure a Safe Journey
This year, the operation includes the participation of 40 federal, state, and municipal agencies. Across Mexico’s 32 states, 226 assistance modules have been set up, supported by 479 citizen observers who will help returning migrants from the moment they enter Mexico until their departure.
As part of the program, 800,000 copies of the Héroes Paisanos Guide are being distributed in the United States and Canada with the support of Mexico’s consular network. Of these, 790,000 copies are in Spanish and 10,000 in English, providing essential information to ensure a smooth and safe journey home.
Digital and Emergency Support for Migrants
In addition to physical guides, the program offers digital resources and assistance. Travelers can access information and support via the official website, www.gob.mx/heroespaisanos, the 911 emergency hotline, and the INM’s Telephone Assistance Center. Social media platforms such as Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and Instagram will also provide real-time guidance throughout the season.
Year-Round Support with Seasonal Reinforcements
While the Héroes Paisanos Program operates year-round, special operations are implemented during Easter, Summer, and Winter holidays to accommodate the high influx of Mexican nationals returning from abroad, particularly from the United States and Canada. These efforts aim to ensure safe and welcoming experiences for all travelers during their journey, stay, and return.
The Winter 2024 operation highlights Mexico’s commitment to its migrant community, recognizing their contributions and ensuring they are warmly welcomed back during the most festive time of the year.
