Severe Cold Front Brings Icy Temperatures Across Mexico
The National Water Commission (CONAGUA) has announced the arrival of Cold Front No. 15 this Monday, marking the start of an intense week of freezing temperatures across various regions of Mexico. The northern states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas will be the first to experience the icy conditions, accompanied by strong winds, rain, and electrical storms.
By Tuesday, the cold front is expected to extend into the central parts of the country. A polar air mass will reinforce the cold weather on Wednesday, intensifying precipitation in states such as San Luis Potosí, Puebla, and Veracruz. In Tamaulipas and Veracruz, a “Norte” event is forecasted, bringing winds of 60 to 90 km/h and waves up to three meters high in the Gulf of Tehuantepec. Authorities have urged residents to take necessary precautions.
The most extreme temperatures, ranging from -15 to -10 °C, will impact Durango throughout the week, while Chihuahua will face similar conditions from Tuesday to Friday. States like Baja California and the State of Mexico will experience frosty lows between -10 and -5 °C. Moderate freezes, with temperatures ranging from -5 to 0 °C, are anticipated in Sonora, Zacatecas, San Luis Potosí, Aguascalientes, Jalisco, Michoacán, Guanajuato, Hidalgo, Tlaxcala, Puebla, Veracruz, and Oaxaca. Meanwhile, Querétaro, Mexico City, Morelos, Coahuila, Sinaloa, and Chiapas are expected to record minimum temperatures between 0 and 5 °C.
During this winter season, CONAGUA advises the public to take extra precautions to stay safe. Recommended measures include dressing in layers, avoiding sudden temperature changes, and refraining from using open flames or stoves in enclosed spaces to prevent accidents. Staying hydrated and keeping up with weather forecasts will also be essential for enduring this extreme cold.
